Temporal patterns in severe hemoptysis requiring bronchial artery embolization

چکیده
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Although some authors have suggested that there is some seasonal periodicity in hemoptysis, temporal patterns of hemoptysis have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study is to describe the temporal pattern of severe hemoptysis which required bronchial artery embolization (BAE). METHODS All consecutive patients with at least one episode of hemoptysis which required BAE during a 13-year period were included. Recurring hemoptysis requiring BAE in a patient with previous embolization was included as a new hemoptysis event, unless it occurred within one month from the prior event. Lineal regression was applied to compute the tendency of occurrence of cases along 13 years of record data. The daily and monthly distributions of embolizations were used to study the weekly and monthly seasonal indexes. RESULTS Hemoptysis requiring BAE occurred with some monthly variation demonstrated with two monthly peaks, with the first one occurring during April and the second one during November. CONCLUSION Hemoptysis occurred with two monthly peaks. This seasonal trend might be due to different prevalence of respiratory tract infections or to some weather variables. Identification of significant environmental factors could be useful to improve preventive measures.

Bronchial Artery Embolization for Massive Hemoptysis: a Retrospective Study
Introduction: To assess the efficacy and safety of bronchial artery embolization in the treatment of massive hemoptysis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study on 46 patients (26 males and 20 females) who were referred to the Razavi Hospital from April 2009 to May 2012 with massive hemoptysis and had bronchial artery embolization procedures. General characteristics of the patients inc...
متن کاملTHERAPEUTIC EMBOLIZATION OF BRONCHIAL ARTERY FOR MASSIVE HEMOPTYSIS
34 bronchial and 13 intercostal arteries were selectively embolized in 27 patients. The most frequent predisposing factor was either active or residual pulmonary tuberculosis. The procedure was performed with Urografin as the contrast agent, cobra shaped or headhunter catheters, and gelfoam (no. 18) or Ivalon (no. 9) particles. The most common anatomic pattern was a common bonchial artery ...
متن کاملRadiological Findings and Outcomes of Bronchial Artery Embolization in Cryptogenic Hemoptysis
Management of cryptogenic massive hemoptysis is difficult, and conservative treatment may be inadequate to stop the hemorrhage. Surgery is not a reasonable option because there is no underlying identifiable pathology. This study aimed to investigate the radiologic findings and bronchial artery embolization outcomes in cryptogenic hemoptysis, and to compare the results with non-cryptogenic hemop...
متن کاملA 58-Year-Old Woman with Recurrent Hemoptysis after Successful Bronchial Artery Embolization
Massive hemoptysis is a life-threatening complication of respiratory disease. It is an emergency requiring immediate medical attention. A 58 year-old woman with bronchiectasis was admitted to the hospital following episodes of massive hemoptysis. Chest CT scan and bronchoscopy did not reveal any endobronchial lesion and bronchial artery angiography and embolization were performed successfully. ...
متن کاملBronchial Artery Embolization for Moderate to Massive Hemoptysis
Massive hemoptysis is a serious condition requiring urgent treatment. Despite advances in surgical and medical management of hemoptysis, it is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality. People have proposed various definitions for massive hemoptysis, the most acceptable being expectoration of 240ml blood in 24 hours [1]. In 90% of cases, significant hemoptysis occurs from bronchial artery ...
